College Principal Suzanne Duncan and Head of ED6 Jacky Owen were both delighted this morning as the first set of A Level results were collected by students from the College’s new sixth form.
East Durham Sixth Form, known as ED6, was set up two years ago by East Durham College to offer local students an alternative to having to travel out of the area to study A Levels; making this our first ever group of A level students and results.
And the College was delighted with the students’ performance who achieved a highly impressive 98.2% pass rate, ahead of the national average, and 100% passed two or more A Levels.
Mrs Duncan said: “As a brand new sixth form, it is always a bit nervous waiting for your first set of A Level results. However, following all the exceptional work put in last year, we were quietly confident the students would do well and reach their potential.
“On behalf of myself and the board, I would like to congratulate all the students and I’m sure they will make a great success of themselves as they move on to the next exciting chapters in their lives.
“We would also like to say a huge thank you to Jacky Owen and her team on a great set of results, which provide a great foundation to build on and improve even further.”
Many of the ED6 students are now off to their chosen university to study on a range of degrees including biology, engineering, psychology, business and finance, sociology, journalism and ICT.
Jacky Owen, pictured below, said: “The students have more than met the challenges presented to them and I was thrilled to see their reactions when they collected their results.
“Many students are going off to their chosen regional university including Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside; as well as a number going further afield to the likes of Manchester, Bedfordshire and Cumbria to study. I am so pleased for the students, their parents and our teaching staff. I will miss the students but wish them all the very best in their next endeavours.”
One such student is Kieran Turnbull, 19, form Horden, who won his place at Newcastle University to study business management. Kieran who got A, B, C in Sociology, Business and Psychology respectively was over the moon with his results and to get into his first choice university.
Kieran said: “I’m absolutely over the moon with my results and to get to Newcastle. It has a great reputation, especially the business school, and I can’t wait to start there.
“My degree is four years, with the third on work placement, so hopefully it will set me up for an exciting career in the future.”
