College Students Talk Firearms With Police

College students studying uniformed public services at East Durham College were treated to a talk from Roads Policing and Armed Response Police Officers.

PC Mark Rogers & PC Keith James from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit came to the Willerby Grove Campus in Peterlee to talk to students about their role within the unit.

PC Rogers and PC James who are both Durham Constabulary Officers, told the students about their time in the Police, some of the scenarios they have been involved with, and how they had handled those situations.

The two officers also taught students about the safety and responsibility that comes with the role as an armed response officer.

PC James said: “I’d like to think we have painted a picture into exactly what we do in terms of how we go about our work and hopefully portray Durham Constabulary as a very professional organisation.

“I believe it was a bit of an eye opener for some of the students, especially when we talk about firearms, as I don’t think they have awareness that we have a number of Police Officers out there carrying firearms on a day to day basis.

“It was also a case of making them fully aware of our role. We are available twenty four hours a day to respond to incidents where it is reported that persons may be in possession of firearms / lethal weapons unlawfully, or where persons have committed crime using firearms/lethal weapons.

“When incidents of this nature are reported, we are deployed with conventional firearms and less than lethal options to bring these incidents to a safe conclusion, at the same time maximising safety to members of the public and our unarmed colleagues.”

Gill Draper, course leader in uniformed public service, added: “Having these officers come in and talk to the students was a real privilege.

“We are very fortunate to have such strong links with Durham Constabulary and the students have really enjoyed their day and tell me they feel they have learnt a great deal.”
