This course focuses on exploring the interactive ways in which people engage with their digital media and looks at the vast amount of opportunities within the industry, especially as it continues to grow and develop. This course could lead to career opportunities in computing, graphics, web design, gaming design, animation roles and much more, it all depends on the individual talents and specialist area as to which route learners progress to.

Overview of the course: 

This course has been developed to follow current digital industry requirements and match the proposed government changes to the national curriculum in ICT. Developments such as iPads, BlackBerrys, Apps, social media and online gaming are now a part of everyday life. The career opportunities in this market are growing massively. Applications and packages studied include Adobe Creative Suite 5, Photoshop, Dreamweaver & Flash, DVD software and use of Office Suite. The course will include guest speakers, trips, work experience activities as well as the individual projects you will work on to achieve the units.

Entry requirements: 

Applicants require at least five GCSEs at grade 4-5 or above (or equivalents), including English and Maths. A BTEC Level 2 Diploma in IT (with Merits or Distinctions) will also be considered.

Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.

Our entry requirements are in place to support our students in achieving the qualifications they have chosen to study. Following changes in the assessment and grading of GCSE’s as a result of Covid-19, all new full-time students will be regularly assessed by East Durham College at an early stage in their study programme. This is to ensure that students are enrolled onto courses which suit their abilities – following assessment, there may be occasions when learners are transferred to a relevant course at a higher or lower level in order to ensure they are enrolled onto the right course for them to achieve success.


The range of topics you will study include: DVD Menu Design, animation, digital graphics, website development, understanding the interactive media industry, working freelance, pre-production techniques, communication skills, research techniques, computer game story development, computer game design, working to a brief, project management and critical approaches to interactive media. Units are subject to change so they cover the two year course.

How is the course assessed?: 

The course is assessed by projects and assignments based on your units, this could be by presentations, voice recordings, reports, video evidence, blogs plus other methods of assessment.

Further study options after this course: 

Progression opportunities include University to study a higher level qualification, employment in the industry and the possibility of apprenticeships depending on the subject area.

Length of the course: 

1 Year Full Time Daytime - In year one, students will study for the Subsidiary Diploma. If they achieve a minimum of a merit grade in all units, they may progress to the Extended Diploma in year two. This full time study programme courses may also be available to study on a part-time basis if you are aged 18 or over on 31st August. Please check with Student Services for more details.

Free if you are under the age of 19 on the 31st August 2021

Free if you are aged 19-23 on 31st August 2021 and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification – contact us to check your qualifications

Loan funded if you already have a full level 3 qualification or are aged 24 and over on 31st August 2021 - contact us to check your qualifications and for details of how to apply for an Adult Learner loan, which you won’t have to start repaying until you earn over £25,725 per annum.
