The course qualifies you as a Counselling Practitioner (a professional Counsellor). You can progress to the BA Honours Degree (a one-year part-time course) at the University of Sunderland.

This course will provide an understanding of the theory, skills and expertise required to work as a professional Counsellor as well as providing progression to higher levels of study in this subject at degree level.

• Level 3 Certificate in Counselling.
• GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent qualifications) in Mathematics and English. If you have studied for a GCSE which has a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a grade 4 or above.
You would normally be in voluntary or paid work as a Counsellor or undertaking (or about to undertake) paid or voluntary work in a setting which will allow you to practice counselling skills. You may also be required to attend an interview.
There is a course requirement stipulating that all students need to acquire student membership of the BACP at own cost prior to beginning counselling practice in a placements. Prospective students are advised to consult the BACP for the latest information on student membership.

Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.

• Core Model of Counselling (varies depending upon the college: humanistic / cognitive behavioural / person- centred and cognitive behavioural) (30 Credits)
• Comparative Models of Counselling (30 Credits)
Year 2 (national level 5)
• Personal Development 2 (20 Credits)
• Supervised Counselling Practice (40 Credits)
• Counselling Research (20 Credits)
• Contemporary Issues in Counselling (40 Credits)
This is a highly practical course, which combines academic study and work-based learning. The elements of the course which are taught in the college include lectures, discussions, case studies and workshops.
Teaching methods include seminars, group work, presentations and debates. Assessment will be by essays, reports and presentations.
Work based part time, over two years.
A minimum of 450 guided learning hours, taught over 33 weeks at 7 hours each week plus self-directed learning.
