Overview of the course: 

This course is designed for those looking to gain entry into the dog grooming industry with little previous experience. The course covers the skills required to groom to a basic standard working towards styling of breed standards, whilst working safely and competently with dogs.

Entry requirements: 

There are no requirements for previous qualifications for entry onto this course, however English and Mathematics qualifications are desirable.

A good working knowledge of English language is essential for this course due to the nature of the customer facing role and record keeping requirements.

Experience of working in a customer facing role is beneficial.

Offers of places on the course are at the discretion of the course manager and may be dependent on a competency assessment.


Topics covered in this course include but are not limited to:

• Health Checking of dogs
• Nail clipping
• Basic preparation for grooming
• Preparing and carrying out bathing
• Drying of dogs after bathing

How is the course assessed?: 

You will be assessed throughout the course through a combination of theory and practical assessments, with a written exam at the end of the course.

Further study options after this course: 

Learners who achieve this course may progress onto a Level 2 Qualification for Dog Grooming Assistants dependent on performance and skills demonstrated at foundation level.

Length of the course: 

The course is offered on a part time basis over the course of 8 weeks.

Delivery will include both in class theory and practical sessions in Houghall's Dog Grooming Studio.
