Double Celebration For Award Winning Barber
A talented barbering student had two reasons to celebrate last week after he won a silver medal at the recent Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) National Finals 2017 and then found out he’d been given a promotion at work the following day.
Level 3 barbering student Craig Harmen, 24, from Hartlepool, who studies at East Durham College in Peterlee, picked up the silver award in the Men’s Barbering Cut & Finish category, which saw him compete against more than 50 other student barbers from other colleges across the UK.
Craig qualified for the finals, which took place at the iconic Blackpool Winter Gardens, after bagging second place at the North East regional qualifies held at the The Lancastrian Suite in Gateshead last month.
Then after he returned to the North East he found out that he had been promoted to manager at Fellaz, a traditional barbers shop in Peterlee, where he has worked for the last year.
Craig said: “I was not expecting to win a medal at all. I know people always say that, but it’s true.
“The standard was unbelievable; I couldn’t have picked a winner out of all the entries, the judges must have had a massive job to pick their top four places.
“But when I was called out as second I was absolutely buzzing, it was an amazing feeling.
“When I got back to work the next day I was then told I was being given a promotion to manager of the shop.
Craig had been doing bar work for about four years after his first stint at sixth form college did not work out, so he decided to completely retrain as a barber and give his career a change of direction.
He enrolled on Level 2 course at East Durham College in 2015 and has not looked back since. His lecturer, master barber Alison Scattergood said: “Craig is my super star!
“He won a second in the City and Guilds UK finals last year, so to add this to his medals is fantastic. He’s a really committed and motivated young man with a great work ethic.
“And to see what started out as a placement at Fellaz turn into a manager’s position just a year later is phenomenal.”
