Mon, 2017-09-04 15:27

East Durham College and Durham University Rugby Club are delighted to announce a new partnership to provide development opportunities for young male and female rugby players.

The link will enable students to complete a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Studies or an A-Level programme, alongside participation in an elite squad within the Rugby Academy.

Selected students will be invited to explore the opportunity of studying at Durham University. This will include the chance to meet with current Durham students and the provision of advice and guidance from staff within Team Durham, including Senior Rugby Coach, Alex Keay.

Squad members will receive an insight into the University’s rugby programme, including use of the excellent facilities at Maiden Castle. With coaching support from the University, the partnership aims to further enhance EDC’s quality training and learning environment and assist in dealing with the demands of the student rugby programme.

Craig Gilmour, Head of Rugby at EDC said: “This is an outstanding opportunity for someone who is dedicated to progressing in both education and rugby. Being able to study at a level 3 standard whilst accessing the training facilities provided by the University is not something offered freely to everyone. Having the chance to meet with current students, Alex Keay and support staff to understand more about studying at Durham will also be very beneficial.”

Durham University is one of the premier rugby universities in the UK competing in the BUCS Super Rugby League and has a long-standing tradition for academic and sporting excellence.

Alex Keay, Senior Rugby Coach at Durham University, said: “We are really pleased to be able to work more closely with East Durham College. Their programme is ambitious and I believe that we can support each other to enable both programmes to grow. We are committed to supporting the development, and ultimately recruiting, local players and this presents us with a fantastic opportunity to do both.”

If you would like further information or are interested in applying please contact Craig Gilmour on 01915188319. Applications for the next academic year are now being accepted.
