East Durham College were delighted with their exceptional performance in the recent AHT (Association of Hairdressing Teachers) National Finals, held in Blackpool. Following a great performance at the north east regional qualifiers, the College had 16 students competing against over 50 other colleges from across England, Scotland and Wales.

Sarah Jane Armstrong beat all comers to win first place in the Nail Art Category with Katherine Cartwright as model. Sarah wowed the judges with her freestyle approach, using her natural artistic skill to create a truly unique look, rather than relying on off the shelf products. Sarah, in her second year on a Level 3 beauty course said, ‘I was absolutely thrilled to win and glad the gamble to use a freehand approach paid off.’

Not to be out done, the boys also tasted success with William Lewis finishing in the top two for the second year running in the Mens Alternative Hair category – with Mark Smedley as model.

The College Hair & Beauty teams regularly compete and achieve at regional and national competitions, the next event is for the 14-16 Increased Flexibility students competition being held at Kirkley Hall, Northumberland, at the end of April – watch this space!

Success at the national competition has also results in an exciting new career move for student Sophie Turner, who came fourth in Nail Art, and has just landed a new job with Steiner Cruise Liners. She sets sail in November.
