East Durham College Student Making The Headlines

Former East Durham College student Georgia Banks has triumphed after an extensive interview process against intense competition, predominantly from university graduates, to earn the chance to become a Junior Journalist at the Northern Echo.

Georgia said: “It’s a dream come true. My experiences at the college have really helped me build my resilience and my understanding of the media sector.

“I have worked on Radio, Print, Animation, TV and Film projects while at East Durham College and I have enjoyed them all. I have a special love for journalism so when I got the confirmation of the job at the Northern Echo it felt like it was my birthday and Christmas combined.”

Georgia studied a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Media at East Durham College and graduated this year with three Distinction star grades. She is very interested in pursuing a career within the media industry after enjoying her course at the college. Through East Durham College, Georgia previously completed work experience at Heart and Capital radio and enjoyed her experience of real, practical work in the industry.

Suzi Martin, Head of Media at East Durham College encouraged Georgia to apply for her course. She said: “Georgia is a very talented individual and an excellent student, I am ecstatic that all her hard work has paid off to gain such an excellent opportunity in the media industry.

“She has done amazing, the interview process was extremely demanding and she was up against much more experienced candidates. Georgia will make an excellent journalist and we will continue to support her throughout her career.”
