A tutor from East Durham College has been honoured with a special award by star of Dragons’ Den Peter Jones CBE.

Jill Campbell, who teaches as part of the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy at the college, has won the organisation’s Enterprise Tutor of the Year award. She was chosen for the prize having been nominated by her students.

Miss Campbell said: “Winning the Enterprise Tutor of the year award was a massive surprise for me. I wasn’t expecting it at all. I am truly honoured to have received such a fantastic award.”

She was presented the honour by Peter Jones himself during the academy’s graduation ceremony at Freemasons’ Hall in London last week (July 2), in front of hundreds of attendees from colleges across the country.
Other award winners announced on the day included the National Entrepreneur of the Year, the Inspirational Student and the Business Enterprise Manager of the Year.

Peter Jones Foundation CEO Alice Barnard said: “Jill has been teaching the course for several years and has become an expert in its delivery. Nothing is too much trouble for her and she is completely dedicated to the success of her students.
“She raises students’ aspirations and confidence, which is very important to us, and as a result they speak extremely highly of her. Jill thoroughly deserves this extra recognition.”

The Peter Jones Enterprise Academy – run by the Peter Jones Foundation – is a nationwide network of colleges that deliver specialist courses in enterprise and entrepreneurship, promoting a practical approach to education.

Students are encouraged to set up and run their own businesses, from which they gain real-life experience of what it takes to get a company off the ground.

Mrs Barnard continued: “Today was the perfect celebration of what’s been a very successful year for our students. So many of them have achieved truly remarkable things during their time with us and we are so proud to see how far they’ve come.

“This has been an exceptional cohort and we’ve no doubt that they’ll go on to great things in the future.”

During the ceremony, the students received video messages of congratulations from various high profile figures and celebrities, including HRH the Duke of York, Robbie Williams, Alan Sugar, Vernon Kay, Dermot O’Leary, Stephen Mulhern and Michael McIntyre.
