East Durham College rugby team secured a 43-10 win away at QE Hexham in the Daily Mail Cup earlier this week.

EDC got the win with tries from, Leon Keirl, Liam Armstrong, Colin Coulson, Josh Pagan, James Rochester, Ryan Mcleod and Nathan Horsfall.

Horsfall also added two conversions to his tally, with Oliver Gray and Kieran Bedford also scoring conversions in the victory.

EDC Head Rugby Coach Liam Gumbrill fielded a young side in the game against Hexham but was impressed with his side’s strong performance, which sees them advance to the third round.

Head Coach Liam Gumbrill said: “We played a very young team, to give them experience of playing in the Daily Mail Cup.

“In bad conditions, they stood up to the test and put in a strong and convincing performance.

“We included a few of the senior players and they helped to guide us to a convincing win. David Kilpatrick in the second row, from Blaydon, and Ryan Mcleod at fly half, from Ryton, put in great performances.”

And after the win at Hexham, East Durham College were due to play rivals Gateshead in the next round but due to their withdrawal from the competition the College will now play either Barnard Castle School or Middlesbrough’s MacMillan Academy for a place in the fourth round.

Despite being knocked out by Barnard Castle in the fifth round last year the Coach feels EDC have a good squad and believes they have the ability to advance to the next round.

Gumbrill added: “We have a stronger squad this season and although we lost to them [Barnard Castle] after getting past Yarm School, if we do end up facing them I think we have a real chance of getting past them this time.

“With a number of players in both the Durham County set up (4) and British Colleges North East team (10), our players are used to playing at a high standard.”
