Apprenticeship in Engineering

With a huge skills shortage and more demand than ever for engineers in a wide variety of sectors, there's never been a better time than right now to consider an apprenticeship in engineering!

If you love working with your hands, solving problems and making things, a career as an engineer could be exactly what you're looking for!

Engineering apprenticeships are the perfect way for you to get your start in your journey towards become a fully qualified engineer. The best part is you actually earn while you learn - you'll be based at an actual employer's premises, completing work just like you would on a real job. Trained staff members and support from East Durham College on day release also ensure you'll get the training you need during your apprenticeship, helping to build up your skills and become an integral part of your employer's workforce.

What Can I Expect To Be Doing as an Engineering Apprentice?

The actual work of an engineer can vary greatly depending on where you work, or the job role you're doing.

Generally, engineers are responsible for using science and mathematics to develop solutions to problems. This could be anything from prepping steel for use in bridge construction to complex product designs using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. The tasks you'll be doing day-to-day can be extremely varied and rewarding and what they are will depend on what type of engineering apprenticeship you are employed to do.

At East Durham College, we work closely with employers from around our region to offer apprenticeships in engineering in the following roles:

  • Engineering Operative Apprenticeships
  • Engineering Product Design and Development Apprenticeships
  • Engineering Technician Machinist Apprenticeships
  • Engineering Technician Mechatronics Apprenticeships
  • Lean Manufacturing Operative Apprenticeships
  • Metal Fabrication Apprenticeships
  • Toolmaker Apprenticeships

Work & Assessments

As part of a Engineering Apprenticeship you will cover a mixture of practical and theory and you will be required to come into college on day release. You will also take part in observations. As part of the apprenticeship framework you will be required to complete functional skills in Maths & English. If you have GCSE grade C or above in Maths & English or equivalent within the last 5 years then you may be released from your functional skills.

You will be assessed throughout the course, during workplace observations and also observed within college day release.
