Overview of the course: 

This qualification covers the fundamental skills and knowledge required for Engineering Technicians within the industry, the units will mainly be delivered within a classroom environment and some workshop sessions to practice and underpin the skills and techniques being taught.

Entry requirements: 

5 GCSE Grades 9-4 Including Maths and English Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.

Our entry requirements are in place to support our students in achieving the qualifications they have chosen to study. Following changes in the assessment and grading of GCSE’s as a result of Covid-19, all new full-time students will be regularly assessed by East Durham College at an early stage in their study programme. This is to ensure that students are enrolled onto courses which suit their abilities – following assessment, there may be occasions when learners are transferred to a relevant course at a higher or lower level in order to ensure they are enrolled onto the right course for them to achieve success.

• Mechanical measurement and inspection techniques
• Fabrication processes and technology
• Welding principles
• Welding technology

How is the course assessed?: 

Learners will be given the opportunity to achieve either Pass, Merit or Distinction grades in each of the individual units which when combined give an overall grade for the course. Successful completion will allow progress on to the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering. The units will be assessed using assignments and some practical work.

Further study options after this course: 

Following successful completion of the course learners will be able to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering course or move into an advanced apprenticeship in Engineering, on successful completion of the 2 year course learners may carry on with further study to Higher Education.

Length of the course: 

1 Year, full time. You may complete a second year and move on to the Extended Diploma. There is an additional fee for year 2. This full time study programme courses may also be available to study on a part-time basis if you are aged 18 or over on 31st August. Please check with Student Services for more details.
