This course is suited to those with an interest in learning more about horses.

Overview of the course: 

This course is aimed at parents whose children are horse mad - and need to get up to speed! It is also idea for adults who have a passion for horses and interested in learning the skills needed to contribute towards the day to day care of horses.

Entry requirements: 

Applicants must be 19 years or older. No prior knowledge or experience required - just an interest in learning more about caring for horses.

Health & Safety - To participate in practical handling activities, you will need safe, sensible footwear, (Steel toe capped boots are recommended, but hiking type boots are acceptable) and warm, dark coloured trousers. Long hair must be tied back and jewellery/piercings removed).

Our entry requirements are in place to support our students in achieving the qualifications they have chosen to study. Following changes in the assessment and grading of GCSE’s as a result of Covid-19, all new full-time students will be regularly assessed by East Durham College at an early stage in their study programme. This is to ensure that students are enrolled onto courses which suit their abilities – following assessment, there may be occasions when learners are transferred to a relevant course at a higher or lower level in order to ensure they are enrolled onto the right course for them to achieve success.

Delivered over 7 weeks, Monday 2nd March - Monday 27th April at Houghall Equine Centre.
The course contains a mixture of theory and practical learning.

Free if you are under the age of 19 on the 31st August 2021

Free if you are under 25 on the 31st August 2021 with a statement of Special Educational Needs or an Education, Health and Care Plan

Free if you are aged 19-23 on 31st August 2021 and do not already have a full Level 2 qualification – contact us to check your qualifications

Free if you are unemployed and in receipt of eligible benefits – contact us to check if you are eligible

Free if you are employed and your income is less than £17,004

If you do not meet the above criteria and need to pay fees they are:
