Simon Vallily, who studied construction and brickwork at East Durham College between 2001/2003 and was part of their boxing academy, last week won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.
Simon is now being tipped as a possible future Olympic champion after he claimed the heavyweight gold with a clinical first-round knockout of Northern Ireland’s Steven Ward.
Vallily caught his opponent with a crunching left within 20 seconds of their bout, held last Wednesday at the Talkatora Stadium, before sending Ward to the canvas in under two minutes - with another destructive left, finished off by a right hook.
Describing his triumph as the high point of his life, Simon said it was all the sweeter given his troubled life before boxing.
“I have proved a lot of people wrong,” said Vallily. “I have got a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and a lot of people back home wouldn’t think I’m where am now, so I’m over the moon. Boxing has kept me on the straight and narrow.”
