After flying 5000 miles, a former student of East Durham College is fulfilling her dreams as she settles into life on a soccer scholarship in the United States.
Laura Hepple, aged 18 from Easington Lane, completed a BND in Sport at East Durham College in July before jetting off to take her place on the prestigious scholarship at Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee.
Laura is the latest in a long line of students from the College to win a sports scholarship in the US.
Laura said: “I couldn’t wait to come to East Durham College and absolutely loved my time at the Football Academy. No other college was an option for me, so I was thrilled when I was accepted on the course.
“I’m absolutely loving life at Bethel, and the football is going really well. I’m getting to travel all over the US playing footie and I’m also getting good grades on my academic course too which is great.”
Laura first started coming to East Durham College to play football at the tender age of 12, through the College’s Community Links Junior Football programme, and is the 19th female student from the College to win a scholarship in America.
Rose Fraser, Sports Development Officer at the College said: “We have great links with a number of institutions in the States to help get our best students onto a scholarship.
“I’m so proud of Laura’s achievements. She had been a part of East Durham College for so many years and we can’t wait for her first visit back to College to share her story with the current crop of sports students.”
Laura is not only playing soccer but has also become part of the Bethel University swimming team, gaining a personal best in her first competition.
Well done Laura.
