Five students at East Durham College in Peterlee have been recognised at a recent Students’ Award ceremony.
Amy Edwards, 19, Peterlee, Sharnie Wiffen, 16, Seaham, Natalie Wilson, 17 Horden, Kay Griffiths, 16, South Hetton & Sophie Smithers, 17, Peterlee all studying on a Level 1 Childcare course were nominated by their tutor, Anne Richardson, for their fantastic efforts while on work placement.
The students are given the opportunity to spend one day a week at a nursery to gain real life work experience and also help them decide if childcare is truly their vocation.
Anne said: “We are asked to nominate one student from our curriculum area for an award, but all five students had impressed their employers so much I felt they should all share the award this time.”
A number of the placement officers at the nurseries involved had spoken of their surprise when they had learned that the students were only on Level 1, some had even wanted to look at possibly giving their placement student a job if they had been a Level 2.
Anne went on to say: “All the students have shown an exceptionally high level of commitment and the placement feedback has surpassed all expectations for Level 1 students. Well done girls.”
Fred Harrison, Assistant Principal at the College, added: “These awards are not just about recognising academic excellence but also about celebrating student endeavour and commitment, whether that’s a student helping or inspiring others or simply working as hard as they can. All these students are shining examples of that.”
