A team of college floristry staff and students are setting off to represent the sector at a major skills expo in Birmingham.
The floristry team, staff members Kay Harker and Rebecca Hough, alongside students Hannah O’Connelley, Allan Raby, Leeanne Brownson and Sue Roberts, who study at East Durham College’s Houghall campus, will travel to Birmingham’s NEC to take part in the 5th World Skills showcase event from Thursday 17th September to Saturday 19th November.
This is the third year that the department have been invited to take part in the event to promote floristry education to 1000s of visitors across the four day show.
Each day the team will put on three major demonstrations based around a country wedding theme, as well as giving visitors the opportunity to take part in hands on activities.
Alongside the showcase activities, the finals of the national skills competitions will take place during the event.
The finalists compete for medals and the opportunity to be selected into Squad UK to train for future WorldSkills international skills competitions. From stonemasonry to floristry, media make up to landscape gardening, the competitions give visitors the chance to witness exceptional talents.
East Durham College, programme area leader for land and plant studies, Kay Harker, is delighted to have been selected again to take part in the event.
Kay said: “This is a great honour to travel once again to Birmingham to take part in this event.
“We are really proud to be able to go and represent the subject we love so much.
“It’s a brilliant platform for our students to come along and show off the skills they have learnt during their time at the Houghall campus, and will be a great opportunity for them to work with members of the public passing on their passion for this fantastic subject.”
