Three former East Durham College Sixth Form (ED6) students spent the afternoon catching up with their former lecturers and inspiring new students ahead of their return to university later this month.
Sarj Dhillon, 19, Alice Ridsdale, 19, and Courtney Graham, 20, all left the college in June 2015, starting university courses later that year after successfully passing their A-level courses.
Sarj, went on to study Chemical Engineering at Lancaster University, Alice is studying Cardiac Physiology at the University of Sunderland and Courtney is at University of Cumbria studying Animal Conservation Science.
All three have successfully passed the first year of their degrees and are set to start their second year, but were happy to come along and share their experiences with current ED6 students who are looking to go on to university in the near future.
Sarj said: “This first year has been really enjoyable but a great challenge too. It’s a different environment to the likes of college and school but I love my course and have had a great time since joining last year.
“I was really proud with my achievement to get through my first year, and at the end of the year I was also made the president of the university’s engineering society.
“I am planning on completing my degree and then my masters; so I still have another three years to go at uni, but I can’t wait to get back for my second year.”
Alice added: “The first year of my cardiac physiology degree has been really challenging but I have really enjoyed it so far.
“My degree has been a mix of traditional university lectures, exams and assignments along with a placement at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
“These placements have been great to be involved with and have really thrown me in at the deep end which I love. They continue through my second and final years, which will hopefully set me up for future employment once my course is completed.”
Courtney said: “My first year of university has been brilliant. My course has been great and I feel I have settled into university life really well.
“I am expecting my second year to be much tougher but I can’t wait for the challenge and look forward to getting back to it.”
