Former Sunderland star, Darren Holloway has taken over as Head Football Coach at East Durham College’s prestigious football academy.
Darren made over 50 appearances for the Black Cats in the 90s, during one of the club’s most successful eras when the team twice finished seventh in the Premier League, but sadly Darren was forced to call time early on his career after persistent knee injuries.
As new head coach at the Peterlee-based College, he follows in the footsteps of the likes of Steve Howey, Michael Proctor and Paul Baker. His role will see him and his coaching team train over 80 students at the Academy and on the College’s special elite scholarship programme.
Curriculum Manager for Sport, Chris English said: “We are delighted to have Darren on board as Head Coach here at East Durham College.
“Darren has a wealth of knowledge in all areas of football coaching and I am sure he will be able to help take our students and the College’s football programme to the next level.”
And Darren can’t wait to get stuck-in to his new role and believes his expertise will help carry the College’s academy and scholarship programme forward.
Darren added: “It’s great to join up with East Durham College as the new head coach.
“The College has a great set up, with fantastic facilities and hopefully my knowledge and expertise will help the students to progress forward and take the College’s scholarship programme to the next level.”
The College currently runs Elite Sports Scholarship Programmes in Football, Rugby and Boxing.
