A former East Durham College Houghall Campus student is bidding for glory at one of the world’s biggest shows.

Rebecca Hough, 24, has reached the finals of the Young Florist of the Year competition at the Chelsea Flower Show which runs from May 21 to May 25.

Rebecca studied Floristry at Houghall between 2010 and 2011 and now works at A Secret Garden florists in Elwick Road, Hartlepool.

But this isn’t Rebecca’s only competition entry this year. She has just recently competed in the Floral Art Finals at Harrogate and is also into the finals of the Interflora Florist of the Future competition in July.

But Chelsea Flower Show is the biggest achievement so far for Rebecca who worked really hard just to get a place in the finals, coming up against competition from all over the UK.

Rebecca said: “I am excited. Chelsea is the ultimate accolade. It is the biggest event in the country and the best go there.

“It was really hard to get into the final I come up against some tough competition from all over the country at the heats in Manchester.

“Each entry for these competitions take a lot of  time, the entry for Harrogate I was working on from Christmas and I am expecting to put around 150 hours into the entry for Chelsea.

“In terms of the size of the competition Chelsea is the biggest I have been in. It’s brilliant to be involved.”
