A highly talented East Durham College hairdressing student picked up a silver medal at a recent skills competition in our region.
The event saw college students from across the North East battled it out in an annual inter-college competition in hairdressing, beauty and media make-up skills tests.
The fiercely fought competition, held this year in Hartlepool, saw students from East Durham College take on their counterparts from seven other colleges: Bishop Auckland College, Darlington College, Gateshead College, Hartlepool College of Further Education, Middlesbrough College, New College Durham and Stockton Riverside College.
And in the hairdressing category, where the students were given an open brief to create any overall look, EDC’s Abbey Johnson, 18, from Easington Lane, was awarded a highly commendable second place.
Independent judge Anna Campbell, of Anna Campbell Hairdressing in Hartlepool, said: “This was a fantastic competition and it’s great, from an industry perspective, to see so many students showcasing their skills.
“I have been overwhelmed by the high standard of entries.”
Programme Area Leader for East Durham College’s Hair & Beauty department, Angela Johnson, said: “It’s great to see this event grow each year, as more and more of our region’s colleges get involved.
“The standard in all the categories was incredibly high and it’s a credit to the region’s FE [Further Education] sector that all our students are developing such fantastic practical skills.”
“I was in complete shock when they called out my name,” Abbey added, “The level of competition was insane and it’s amazing to pick up a silver medal.”
