Hairdressing & Barbering
Get your start in the exciting, rewarding and ever-popular hairdressing and barbering industry by taking a course with East Durham College!
Taught at our Peterlee campus, our hairdressing courses and barbering courses give you everything you need to sharpen up your skills.
Working in the hair industry is a great option for any learner. Whether you want to specialise in women's or men's hair, a hairdressing or barbering course at East Durham College will teach you everything you need to know to get you employment in a salon or barbershop.
College Salon Facilities
At EDC, we have a dedicated commercial hair salon that's open to the public. This means that you won't just be practising on mannequins and wigs - you'll get real, working experience of what it's like to work in a salon during your time with us.
Links with various hairdressing suppliers help us to provide you with the latest equipment and products, simulating a realistic salon environment.
The salon itself includes everything you'd expect from a commercial salon, including workstations with adjustable chairs, large-size mirrors and sinks for washing hair.
Alongside our salon facilities, hairdressing and barbering students also work in large-size professional workshops, where our tutors will help you to hone your skills.
Experienced, Professional Hairdressing & Barbering Tutors
You can expect to learn from the very best during your course at EDC - our tutors have worked for years in the hairdressing and barbering industries, and are masters of their craft.
Our barbering lecturer Alison Scattergood was the UK's first female to be awarded with a Master Barber title and was awarded FE Teacher of the Year in 2018, beating teachers from a wide variety of subjects across the entire country.
Hone Your Craft in Competitions & Training
Want to show off your skills? As well as gaining knowledge through your tuition, we also offer a great enrichment and events programme as part of your hairdressing and barbering course.
We regularly encourage our students to compete in various different competitions during the college year and many previous students have gone on to win prestigious competitions both regionally and at a national level.
Due to excellent links with industry, we are able to provide training sessions with experienced external hairdressers and barbers too.
Our strong links with the industry allow us to monitor and cascade emerging trends to students, allowing them to develop their skills further with organisations like Toni & Guy and Rusk Training.
Students are given the opportunity to attend one-day-a-week work placements, leading in many cases to employment.
The College has a fantastic hair and beauty salon which is a state-of-the-art training salon we are incredibly proud of.
