C&G Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Barbering (Part Time)

Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to an employer that the individual has the skills and knowledge of health & safety, customer service, and also has the necessary advanced cutting, shaving and styling skills necessary to be employed as a senior barber.

Overview of the course: 

8 hrs Barbering, 6hrs Maths & English if applicable (16-19 yrs
3 hrs practical session-working with paying clients

3 hrs theory/academic study skills

2 hrs cutting/shaving skills training

Homework is also an integral part of the course, where activities are completed via the college Moodle site.

Employer involvement will also be an integral part of the course in the form of guest lectures and master classes.

Entry requirements: 

L2 Ladies/Gents Diploma or equivalent industry training, L2 Function skills in Maths/English or working towards.

1 hour trade test to include;

Creatively cut hair, one hair cutting services.

The clients must have a full head of hair.

They must be creative restyles that alters the shape of the hair.

You must use blending/fading across a minimum 25% of the head for a minimum of one of the cuts. Clippers without attachments must be used for a minimum of one of the cuts.


This qualification covers a very wide range of skills and knowledge required for working in the barbering industry.
These are compulsory areas:

• Cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques

• Design and create facial hair shapes

• Shaving services
• Barbering consultation services
Optional unit

• Design and create patterns in the hair

How is the course assessed?: 

Externally marked test-that covers the learner’s depth & breath of knowledge across the mandatory units and at the end period of learning.

Externally moderated synoptic assignment (practical)-these assignments are externally set, internally marked & externally moderated.

Externally moderated assignment for the optional unit taken-these assignments are externally set, internally marked & externally moderated and are to identify a selection of skills, techniques and knowledge.

Learners that fail any of the tests will have one opportunity to re-sit, all assessments happen at the end period of learning.

Fees for this course are: £3345.00

If you have been a UK resident for the past 3 years and are under the age of 19 on the 31st August, you will not usually need to pay any course fees.

If you are aged 19-23 on the day your main course starts and do not have a level 3 or above qualification you may not have any fees to pay.

If you do have a level 3 or above qualification or you are aged 24 years or over on the day your main course starts you may be able to take out an Advanced Learning Loan to pay for this course.

City & Guilds Group Bursaries
City & Guilds Group Bursaries are available to learners starting or completing a City & Guilds or ILM qualification, starting courses on or after 1st September 2017.

To qualify learners need to be able to
- Demonstrate genuine financial need that would otherwise prevent them from completing their chosen qualification
- Be over 19 years old
- Be a UK resident.

Bursaries range from £200 to £10,000 and can cover any costs that arise as a result of the learner undertaking a City & Guilds or ILM qualification.
