Students from East Durham College’s Hair and Beauty department have come away with medals from the prestigious Associated Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) annual colleges’ competition.
After picking up a whole host of awards earlier in the year at the AHT regional competition in Gateshead, the students travelled to compete against colleges from across the UK at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens.
Three students picked up medals at the fiercely competitive event. Level 2 hairdressing student Lisa Stoker, 31, from Peterlee, grabbed second place in the Fantasy Hair category, NVQ Level 3 barber Shannon Cummings, 19, from Peterlee, also picked up a second place in the Men’s Creative Designs and Patterns category and another Level 3 barber Rachel Hodgeman, 21, from Hartlepool, was placed third in the same category, adding to her first place she won at the regional finals.
And Simon Smith, curriculum leader for hair and beauty, praised the students for their performances.
Simon said: “All the students performed really well in a tough competition at Blackpool, and it’s great to see the College come home with some medals.
“It was a really high standard, as always, and an amazing event to be a part of, there were over 2,000 people there. I’m delighted with the performance of the whole team; students and staff.”
