Horticulture. This one day practical course will cover the practical skills and knowledge needed to be be competent in the operation of a Pedestrian Mower.

Overview of the course: 

A practical course. The Houghall Estate provides the ideal environment for you to gain practical skills and knowledge and give the opportunity to develop skills to progress in the land based environment.

Entry requirements: 

There are no formal entry requirements Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.
East Durham College's Houghall Campus is committed to providing a supportive and welcoming environment for all our students. The campus, some of which is over 80 years old, has seen over £40m invested in new facilities over the last 4 years. However, there are still some aspects of the site which are not fully accessible and would cause an issue for those with limited mobility or wheelchair users; and due to the nature of the site, adjustments may not always be reasonable at this stage. The College is committed to further investment and improvements of the site, as we work towards ensuring the campus is as assessible as possible. 1. Health & Safety in the use of Pedestrian Grass Mowers.

2. Operation and maintenance including:

• Fuel/oil levels
• Air filters
• Cutting cylinder adjustment (if applicable)
• Height of cut adjustment
• Safety adjustments of belts/drives/guards
• Lubrication points

2-stroke mixes (if applicable)

3. Starting/stopping procedures.

4. Operating procedures including mowing of banks.

5. Mowing patterns and quality.

How is the course assessed?: 

Assessed during the course using practical activities.
