East Durham College’s annual open day, held at their Houghall Campus, was once again a resounding success with over 3,000 visitors attending the event.
The day gave visitors a great opportunity to find out more about the wide range of land based courses and training the College offers. Plus there was loads of fun for all the family, with a number of fascinating demonstrations and activities throughout the day including various equine displays, dog agility, sheep
shearing, falconry, tree climbing and chain saw demonstrations.
The Equine Arena proved popular with the crowds, who were entertained by displays of student equestrianism including musical rides to ACDC’s Thunderstruck (being used on the Iron Man 2 soundtrack) and Sweet Ballroom Blitz with the display being called ‘The Rocking Horse Show’.
Anne Symons, an Equine Lecturer, said; “I am overwhelmed by the commitment and professionalism displayed by all the students. Students from all levels within the Equine Unit have displayed unquestionable motivation and enthusiasm.”
Jane Pringle, Head of Houghall, added; “We are thrilled at the success and massive turnout for the event. It was a great opportunity for us to showcase the fabulous estate we have at Houghall.
“All the staff were fantastic but thanks must also go to the students, who’s help in the lead up and on the day made it all possible.
“The students even held a Litter Awareness Day, just prior to the event, to ensure the estate looked its absolute best. A special thanks must go to the Animal Care students and particularly Kevin Breeze and Rebecca Taylor who were the driving force behind this initiative.”
