ITV Interview Steve Howey

ITV Tyne Tees today interviewed Newcastle United legend Steve Howey, for his thoughts on Newcastle winning the Championship league title, for the Tonight programme.
Steve, who is now on the football coaching staff at East Durham College, told reporter Chris Ford: “It doesn’t matter what league or what level you win a title in, it still matters. It shows you’ve been the most consistent team in the league and I think it’s fantastic for the club.
It was 17 years ago that Steve was part of Kevin Keegan’s winning team that got the club into the Premiership for the first time. Steve recalled: “It was huge, the club had not won anything for a very long time and it got us back into topflight football.
“We had a very strong team then and Kevin didn’t need to make too many changes to complete. I think Chris has some quite big decisions to make on players to come in and go out.”
Unlike in 1993, the team will not be having an open top bus tour of the city. Steve commented: “I think it’s a real shame for the lads and the fan. Not everyone will be able to get in to St James’ to share in the celebrations and show their appreciation.
The bus tour gives you memories for life. I can still picture Lee Clarke at the front of the bus not letting anyone else get hold of the trophy.
“I was on an interview with Steve Harper this morning, who was calling from the team coach, and you could really hear the excitement of the team – it’s a little bit disappointing they will miss out on some of those memories.”
Steve made over 450 professional career appearances and earned 4 England caps.
