A Sunderland amateur boxer was recently selected for England ABA and had his first International bout on Monday night.

Jake Slater, aged 17, from the Cleadon area of Sunderland, had the honour of stepping into the ring to represent his country for the first time ever at the St. Andrew’s Sporting Club in Glasgow.

The sports studies student, who attends East Durham College in Peterlee, faced Mark McKeown from the Scottish National Team but was narrowly beaten 8 points to 7 in a Senior Boys bout.

Jake, who flights at 60kgs, is trained by England ABA and East Durham College Boxing Academy coach Dave Binns.

“Jake has come on immensely. I didn’t think he would be fighting at this level yet but he just keeps improving, definitely one to watch out for,” said Binns.

Jake added: “After controlling the first round, boxing comfortably in the second and dominating the third I was guttered not to get the decision. But I’m looking forward to my next chance.”
