Engineering apprentice Kaylee Mcnally, who works for Newton Aycliffe’s Arlington Automotive, has been named as one the UK’s brightest engineering prospects after winning the highly prestigious Apprentice of the Year title at the sixth annual Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Alliance (SEMTA) Skills Awards.

Kaylee, 19, from Sunderland, was recognised at the awards ceremony for her incredible work ethic, and her efforts to promote inclusivity and diversity in the engineering industry.

Kaylee’s apprenticeship in manufacturing technology is delivered by East Durham College, and her tutor, Dion Bowes, couldn’t be happier with Kaylee’s incredible achievement.

Dion said: “I think I’m still in shock. Kaylee totally deserves this – it’s fantastic to see someone so talented from the North East beating competition from all over the country.

“Congratulations Kaylee – you’re an absolute class act and the future is yours for the taking.”

Speaking to the Northern Echo, SEMTA chair, Dame Judith Hackitt DBE said: “I am genuinely inspired when skills are exhibited to a high level, as showcased in tonight’s nominations and by winners like Kaylee.

“Seeing the brilliance on show, provides reassurance that engineering and manufacturing industries, which are the backbone of Britain’s economy, continue to pave the way in finding and supporting outstanding talent."

From all of us at the college, we'd like to express our huge congratulations to Kaylee on a thoroughly-deserved award. Want to read more about Katie's day-to-day work, and why she encourages others to take an apprenticeship? Click here to read our full article!
