Overview of the course: 

If you love animals, working outdoors or are interested in getting into farming, our Introduction to Lambing course, taught at our Houghall Campus in the heart of Durham, is the perfect course for you.

In this hands-on, single-day, practical course, you'll be interacting with our flock of sheep during the lambing season, learning new skills and how to deal with all aspects of the lambing process.

The course is taught by Bob Shaw, Agricultural Lecturer at the Houghall Campus. A veteran farmer with over 30 years of experience in the industry, Bob has lambed thousands of sheep and is delighted to be teaching the next generation of farmers in many agricultural short courses including this lambing course and in others such as sheep shearing, small holding and dry stone walling.

In this very hands-on course each day will be different depending on which ewes are lambing at the time. You'll be covering many different topics during the course, including:

- Year-round shepherding
- Lowland farming
- Hill farming
- Zoonosis
- Disease in humans and sheep
- Feeding and body condition before lambing
- Caring for the ewe both before and after birth
- Lamb fostering
- Lamb survival techniques
- Difficult births
