An East Durham College student took first place in a recent skills competition between local colleges. Lee Dodds, 44, from Haswell, came out on top ahead of three other competitors at the competition held at East Durham College’s Technical Academy.
The day saw students from East Durham College, New College Durham and Hartlepool College of Further Education compete in a skills challenge were they had to, from a drawing with set measurements, form a rig using low carbon steel pipe, copper tube and plastic pipe within a set time.
The students work was then marked by three judges, one from each of the colleges, with Lee being announced as the overall.
Technical Academy centre manager, Rob Hutchinson hailed the day as a great success and a unique way for students to demonstrate the skills they have learnt.
Rob said: “We had a fantastic afternoon for the inter-college plumbing competition at the Technical Academy.
“Between the local colleges we have held a number of these competitions for different subjects areas over the last few months and the students have really enjoyed the opportunity to go up against each other and show off the skills they have been learning on their courses.
“The level of work on the day was extremely high and it was a very close call by the judges in the end.
“Lee has been working really hard on his course recently at The Technical Academy, and it’s great to see him come away with first place, very well deserved.”
