Legends Football Match At College

Mon, 05/06/2000 - 01:00

East Durham College is holding an Open Day and Spring Fayre event at their campus in Peterlee. The event is to enable as many people  as possible in the region to have a look around the college facilities, find out about courses starting in September and just have a great family day out.

As part of the event, the College will be holding a North East Legends’ football match. This will be between the College team and coaching staff, which includes Steve Howey (ex-Newcastle Utd & England), Paul Baker, Brian Honour and Stuart Brightwell (ex-Hartlepool Utd) – and a Legends team which will include Steve Harper, Peter Beardsley, Rob

Lee and John Beresford. More players are to be confirmed.

Steve Howey, Newcastle Utd legend and football coach at East Durham College, said: “I have been a coach at East Durham College’s Football Development Centre for 4 year now. It is one of the best facilities I have ever used.

“Head of Sport, Denise Collingwood, asked me if we could pull together something special for the open day and spring fayre. I thought a Legends match would be perfect, so I called some old friends and they have all been more than happy to help out.”

Steve made over 450 professional appearances, playing for Newcastle Utd, Manchester City, Leicester City, Bolton Wanders and Hartlepool Utd, and earned 4 England caps during his impressive career.

Rose Fraser, Sport Development Officer at East Durham College added: “We are delighted Steve has been able to arrange this for the College and we are honoured to have such an outstanding line up of ex-profession players within our coaching team, making our football development programme unique.

“Here at East Durham College we are committed to supporting grass roots sports development and are really looking forward to meeting the players and local youngsters for what I am sure is going to be yet another very successful event here at the College”.

Open Day & Spring Fayre is being held on Saturday 8th May, 10am till 1pm. There will be loads of activities and demonstrations such as a dog agility display, face painting & airbrush tattoos, bouncy castle, free make overs and lots more. There’s no need to book, just turn up!
