Achieving a Functional Skills qualification is a stepping stone into many types of education and employment. Many universities requires you to have at least a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification to be accepted onto a graduate course. Similarly many employers now require you to have some level of Maths qualification to demonstrate you have the necessary number, reasoning and problem solving skills needed in the work place.

Overview of the course: 

The course is delivered in class-based taught sessions, supported by use of our online learning environment (Moodle). You will attend for two hours per week and be expected to complete one hour of independent learning per week. The sessions are available during daytime and on an evening to help you access the course at convenient time.

Entry requirements: 

There are no formal entry requirements to the course but it is expected that you will be sitting an initial assessment during enrolment to identify appropriate level for you to enrol on. Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.


You will study Functional Skills Maths which includes practical development of your skills in three main areas: Number, Data Handling and Shape and Space

How is the course assessed?: 

You will be assessed in a final exam but formative assessment will take place throughout the year to assess and track your progress. Also this will help you prepare for your final exam.

Further study options after this course: 

After successfully completing the appropriate level you can progress onto the next level. You can also progress onto GCSE Maths after achieving Functional Skills Level 2.

Length of the course: 

1 year part-time. Two hours in class usually 6pm-8pm and one hour independent study.
