Matthieu Connelly has been awarded Student of the Month at East Durham College.

Matthieu joined the College last year as part of the Derwent Autistic Spectrum Condition Unit. In his first year he expressed his interest in Art and aimed to work towards attending a full time art course at the College by the start of this academic year.

He has picked up the award as the team at the ASC unit are extremely proud of Matthieu’s achievements as he is now fully integrated on the full time Art course.

Tracey Smith, who works for the ASC Unit said: “What Matthieu has done is a massive achievement. Throughout his first year Matthieu was determined to attend a full time Art course by the start of this year.

“In his first year Matthieu had a transition period were he went on numerous taster sessions to the Art classes.

“He is now fully integrated into the Art programme, splitting time between both Peterlee and Houghall.

“Matthieu deserves this award for the problems he has overcome to get were he is today. For Matthieu he has huge pressures of a mainstream course along with his day to day difficulties such as Social Interaction.

“But through Courage and determination Matthieu has achieved his goal.”
