Dedicated student Nathan Ayre has been selected for a student award for his progression and hard work on his horticulture course and described by his lecturers as a real star.

Staff from East Durham College’s Houghall Campus praised Nathan, 19, who’s from Chester-le-Street, for the distance he has come in his learning since joining the college over 2 years ago.

Curriculum leader for arboriculture and horticulture, Dawn James, put Nathan forward for the award; hailing him for his drive, manners and progression throughout his time on the course.

Dawn said: “Nathan is a fantastic student with excellent attendance and punctuality, as well as a terrific standard of work. Nathan is always happy to assist others, both students and staff alike.

“But it’s Nathan’s professionalism and dedication to his work that really sees him shine – he’s a real star.

“Since joining us in 2010, Nathan has worked extremely hard to overcome personal difficulties.

“All of Nathan’s work has dramatically improved and this is down to his commitment and drive to progress his career and quality of life to become a professional horticulturist.”

And as much as Nathan loves his course and the time he spends at the college in Durham he can’t wait to become a professional horticulturist in the future.

Nathan said: “I love my course at the College, if I didn’t I wouldn’t be here. It’s just great being able to do something I love everyday amongst a fantastic group of people.

“I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for me, the dream is to be a professional horticulturist. When I leave at the end of the year I hope to get work in plant production or working in a local plant nursery.”
