Many employers and universities require their staff/students to hold qualifications in both maths and English at level 2.

Overview of the course: 

This course is for people who cannot regularly attend college but would like to develop their English skills. The course requires you to work independently and to complete tutorials, either online or in person. You will be given access to online materials and resources to help you study at home.

Please note that this course is FREE of charge for those who do not already have a grade 4/C grade in mathematics (or equivalent). Attendees will be expected to attend college for examinations at the end of the course.

If you already have a grade C or above, there is a fee associated with this course of £714.

Entry requirements: 

You do not need to hold any previous qualifications for this course, however you cannot study this programme if you already have a level 2 qualification in English. At enrolment you will be diagnostically assessed to see which level of Functional Skills it is most appropriate for you to start with.

- Writing for a purpose
- Reading texts and extracting key information
- Spelling, punctuation and grammar

How is the course assessed?: 

Your progressed will be monitored through using BKSB, which is an online system you will have your own login details for. This will allow us to check your progress against each skill that is needed for the exam.

Formal assessment will include online/paper based exams and a speaking and listening assessment. These will take place at East Durham College but can be held at either our Willerby Grove or Houghall campus.

Further study options after this course: 

You can progress through the Functional Skills levels until you have achieved level 2. Options after this are to study GCSE or a level 3 Access to HE course.

Length of the course: 

You will progress at your own pace and will be assessed when your tutor decides it is suitable. This full time study programme courses may also be available to study on a part-time basis if you are aged 18 or over on 31st August. Please check with Student Services for more details.
