Level 3 Diploma in Performing and Production Arts

Course Level:

Level 3

Job opportunities after this course:

Completion of year one of this programme would give the learner a Level 3 Diploma in Performing & Production Arts. Progression could be onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing & Production Arts, into employment or an Apprenticeship. You will have exposure to a range of practical activities through workshops, rehearsals, performance projects and work experience to develop practical skills and build theoretical portfolios to prepare you for the next level of study.

Overview of the course:

The Level 3 programmes are designed to help you extend your understanding of the Performing & Production Arts Industries whilst developing your skills in dance, drama music and production; you will learn techniques as well as create your own performances and the emphasis for the programme is on projects. You will work on production projects and be involved in many activities both onsite and at external venues. Learners have the opportunity to perform on board the ferry to Holland, participate in the annual Community Pantomime and be part of live stream events working with other creatives. If you are passionate about working in the Arts, then this is the programme for you.

Entry requirements:

Five 9-4 grade GCSEs (including Maths and English). Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.

Our entry requirements are in place to support our students in achieving the qualifications they have chosen to study. Following changes in the assessment and grading of GCSE’s as a result of Covid-19, all new full-time students will be regularly assessed by East Durham College at an early stage in their study programme. This is to ensure that students are enrolled onto courses which suit their abilities – following assessment, there may be occasions when learners are transferred to a relevant course at a higher or lower level in order to ensure they are enrolled onto the right course for them to achieve success.

Topics:

The programme is 'learner responsive' which means we build projects around the learners who have chosen this programme of study. You will be given guidance over the development of projects, which help you to develop independence. You will also participate in annual events, stage major productions and have the opportunity to see professional performances at venues in London and experience a different culture in Holland.

How is the course assessed?:

There are eight units on the Level 3 Diploma and the work is graded as 'Pass' / Merit / Distinction'. The course is assessed internally by an assessor, before being internally and externally verified to check the marking is consistent. Assessment includes live performance, written submissions, viva voce (interview to camera), photographic evidence, sound tracks, lighting plans, costumes and props.

Further study options after this course:

Students achieving a Merit at year one of the UAL Level 3 Diploma, can progress onto the Extended Diploma in Performing & Production Arts (Level 3). Progression for most learners after successful completion of the Extended Diploma is onto a Foundation Degree in Performing or Production Arts or a BA (Hons) in Performing Arts / Dance / Drama / Music / Production. Alternative choices include employment as a Performer, in Arts Administration or Production, either working for an employer or as a freelance artist.

The UAL Level 3 Diploma is a one year programme, with the Extended Diploma in year two; you will study across four to five days each week with some remote learning.
