East Durham College’s Peter Jones Enterprise Academy students have been pitching their own business ideas to local entrepreneurs.

The students pitched for an investment in their business ideas and also aiming to get themselves a business mentor.

Before Christmas each student put together two business proposals before deciding on their strongest business idea to pitch yesterday.

A wide range of business ideas included a DJ business, a personalised gift company, homemade soaps and a mobile beauty business.

Local business people, Katherine Briggs from Growth Accelerator, Melissa Middleton from Project North East and local entrepreneur Lloyd Quinney, came into the College’s Peterlee Campus to hear the students’ proposals in a Dragons’ Den style event.

With the aim to impress the panel, students pitched their business idea, showing their research, business plans and the profits they projected over the four months that the business will be running.

East Durham College Peter Jones Enterprise Academy lecturer, Jill Campbell hailed the process as a unique learning experience and praised the local businesses for their support.

Jill said: “This is a fantastic task and a huge part of the course.

“The whole task starting back before Christmas, when the students came up with their ideas, through to the pitches this week and then onto the next four months as they aim to create a successful business are all great learning experiences for any young entrepreneur.

“I would also like to say thank you to Katherine, Melissa and Lloyd for taking part and investing in some of the businesses and also agreeing to help these businesses grow by becoming mentors for the students.”
