Peter Puts His Back Into It

A Consett man who broke his back three years ago is rebuilding his life thanks to some very hard work and dedication.

Peter England, 41, was no longer able to work as a self employed landscape gardener following an accident at work which left him in hospital for 9-months.

So once he was able to get about he decided to retrain in a trade that would put less stress on his back. Peter heard about tiling courses at The Technical Academy, run by East Durham College in Peterlee, he decided to give it a go – and has never looked back since.

Peter was praised by his lecturer last night when he picked up The Technical Academy Student of the Month Award at the College.

Tiling Lecturer Stephen Ord said: “Peter is an outstanding student who all members of staff think very highly of. He produces excellent work and puts 100% into everything he does.

“Peter has shown great commitment to the course particularly as he also has to travel over 50 miles a day to attend his course three days a week.”

Peter has even come along to The Technical Academy on his days off to work on various projects, one of which was a stunning mosaic he created for Gateshead Housing Group.

Peter who will complete the Level 2 Diploma in Tiling later this month hopes to find some part-time work as a tiler or may consider progressing on to the Level 3 Diploma at the Academy.

“I was thrilled to find out I had won the award, I’ve been grinning like a big kid since and telling all my family and friends.”

The Technical Academy offers courses in Floor & Wall Tiling, Plastering, Gas & Electrical Maintenance and Installation as well as Kitchen/Bathroom fitting and plumbing.
