Job opportunities after this course: 

After studying the Level 2 Certificate in Photography, some learners choose to open their own business or studio, some will work freelance, whilst others will use the knowledge and skills learnt on the course to support their work. For some learners it is a stepping stone to higher qualifications such as Level 3 Media, Art & Design or an A Level in Photography.

Overview of the course: 

The course is delivered on one evening per week. Learners study a total of 120 hours and three units to gain a total of 16 credits. Practical and theoretical tasks are covered in sessions and lead to projects, enabling learners to explore taking and manipulating images. Use of the college's VLE (Canvas) allows learners to revisit work and communicate with the tutor and peers.

Entry requirements: 

Please note that our photography courses is only available to adults above the age of 19. For those who are below 19, we offer a photography A Level option as part of our sixth form, ED6.

3 GCSEs with grades 3 or above (including Maths and English) Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.


There are two core units and one optional unit, these are designed to introduce and then develop your understanding of the functions of the camera; to develop your knowledge of photographers and their work, whilst exploring your own style and to present a portfolio of work, which is exhibited at the end of the course. Your work for the presentation unit can be on any area such as studio / location / commercial / documentary or experimental photography. You will take all three units to gain the 16 credits necessary to successfully complete this course.

How is the course assessed?: 

You will create a portfolio of evidence which will be assessed internally by your tutor before being approved by an External Moderator. The Moderator will visit at the end of the course.

Further study options after this course: 

Upon successful completion of this programme you can progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Media, or onto the Level 3 Introductory Diploma in Art & Design, as both courses have elements of Photography, or alternatively you could progress onto an A Level Photography course.
