Prince's Trust Helps Build Friendships & Futures

Mon, 16/10/2000 - 01:00

The first group of Prince’s Trust Team students based at East Durham College’s Houghall Campus recently spent an exciting week in Alnmouth, Northumberland taking part in an action packed team building experience.

12 lucky learners were lead on the 5-day residential course by Mark Lambert and also Assistant Team Leader Greg Corcoran from the College.

“The aim of the trip was to help the learners build up their confidence, communication skills and team work experience. The activities were really challenging ranging from rock climbing to beach kite surfing.

“The team bonded really well and I’m sure they built relationships that will last a life time. Everyone throw themselves into it and gave it their all. I was really proud of them,” he said.

Student Daniela Armillei, aged 17 from Framwellgate Moor, said: "The rock climbing and the ice breakers were awesome, and I learned some really good skills."

Darren Hogarth, aged 20 from Brandon, added: "I managed to connect with other people and have identified skills I never thought I had."

The Prince’s Trust Team programme is an exciting free personal development programme for unemployed young people aged 16-25 years. The programme is specially designed to help them to decide on their futures.

Jane Pringle, Head of the Houghall Campus, added: “The 12 week Prince’s Trust programme is an innovative and proven way for young people who have perhaps not had the best start in life at home or school to start to realise their potential.”

The students, who will complete the programme in mid April, are also taking part in a community project renovating a public garden and will go on a work placement. They will also be given the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications.

So, if you're unemployed, aged 16 to 25, unsure about your future and fancy looking for adventure, direction, new skills, new challenges and fun, then this could be the programme for you.

The next programme starts in May so please call Student Services for more details on 0191 375 4710.
