A young barber has snipped her way to success in a regional competition.

Rachel Hodgman, 20, is studying an advanced class in wet shaving at the College picked up first prize at last week’s North-East regional heats of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists competition in the Men’s Cut and Blow Dry category.

Along with her course Rachel also works at Murray Street Barbers in Hartlepool where she has spent the last 18 months applying the skills she has learned the Peterlee-based College’s state-of-the-art Salon.

And despite the high pressure of the competition Rachel is proud to have come away from the event with a first place.

Rachel said: “It’s really good to have won.

“We had to find a model, and set them up as we wanted, in this case in a suit and tie, and then do the haircut around the look.

“We had 30 minutes, there was a few of us doing it together, with judges walking round to check everything was OK."

And now Rachel is looking to the future, looking to complete her studies at the College and keep on improving her profession.

Rachel added: “I want to finish off this advanced class, look to the future, and keep improving.”
