World renowned barber, Mucktaru Kargbo, known as MK, put on a show to nearly 300 members of the north east barbering community, earlier this week, at East Durham College.

MK, who is based in London, has spent two days at East Durham College’s Peterlee campus; working alongside staff and students, with his time in the north east culminating in a show at the college’s Lubetkin Theatre on Tuesday night.

The show saw MK put on a number of demonstrations to the large crowd, showing off his own unique styles and techniques which he has been honing for 20 years, along with performances by students from East Durham College’s creative industries department and Anita Harris’s School of Dance.

The event, named Bridging The Gap, was aimed at both barbering students and barbering employers across the north east, in an aim to make better connections between the two groups within the region.

MK, hailed the night as a great success and thanked the college for a great couple of days leading up to the show.

MK said: “We have had a fantastic time up in the north east the past couple of days with East Durham College.

“We have had great fun working in their state-of-the-art facilities at the Peterlee campus, I hope the students have taken some tips and techniques away from the sessions we have held with them.

“The show we put together was a great success, and it was lovely to meet some of the north east’s great barbering community.

“A huge thank you must go to Alison Scattergood from the college who has helped put this event together and to the creative industries department and also the dance school for their performances.

“Hopefully we will be able to work together again in the near future.”

East Durham College’s barbering lecturer, Alison Scattergood added: “It was a huge honour to have MK with us over the last couple of days here at the college.

“The students have really enjoyed having MK and his team around, learning some valuable techniques; he has been a huge inspiration to the students.

“The Bridging The Gap show was a great way to end MK’s visit, and it was fantastic to see a sold out theatre on the night.

“We hope to welcome MK back to the college soon.”
