The Newcastle Falcons are hosting a curtain-raiser at their Druid Park training ground, on Friday 26th February, as East Durham College face Gateshead College.
The two teams have been selected to play as they currently occupy the top two spots of this season's North East Further Education Merit League. The game will be officiated by students from two local University Referees Societies (Durham and Newcastle).
Captain of Team East Durham Rugby, Richard Walsh, aged 18 from Horden, said: “We have had some great victories this season, but my best memory was beating Gateshead by 1 point in our first game of the season, with a conversion in the final minute of the match. I hope we don’t leave it that late this time.”
Liam Gumbrill, Head Coach of Rugby at East Durham College, added: “This is a great opportunity for the players to participate in such a high profile game and I hope the excitement of the event doesn’t get to the lads.
“We have been working really hard towards this match, as it was such a close call in the previous game. We have matured as a team since then and we are all looking forward to a great day out, let’s just hope it ends with a win for Team East Durham!”
Kick-off for that game is at 4.30pm, with free entry for all supporters.
The same day see’s Kingston Park play host to international rugby action, as England Students take on Ireland Colleges. Newcastle Falcons flanker Mark Wilson is among the North-East stars forming part of the England squad.
