Ryan Hepple’s commitment to his college work is exceptional to say the least and this was just one of the reasons why he recently picked up a coveted student award at East Durham College.
Sports Student Ryan, who also swims for the North East & Cumbria, is in the pool for 5.30am three mornings a week and a further five evenings a week practicing for the Great Britain National Finals in Sheffield, which take place in two months time.
Ryan, who is 17 and lives in Easington Lane is looking to follow in his sisters footsteps and win a full scholarship to study in America. Sister, Laura Hepple, completed a BND in Sport at East Durham College in July 2010 before jetting off to take her place on the prestigious football scholarship at Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee.
Ryan commented: “I’m coming back to EDC to study the Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science next year and then I’ll be leaving for the States too. Bethel University are interested but I need to weigh up the pros and cons of living near my sister before I decide with US Uni to go to.”
Ryan went on to say: “It’s the Nationals in 2 month so I’m training hard and I’m training well. I’m looking for a least a semi-final. My ultimate aim is the Olympics in 2016.”
Sports Lecturer Martin Johns added: “Ryan has shown excellent attitude to his studies since joining us in September. “He fully understands the importance of his education and has shown a huge amount of commitment despite a hectic timetable and swimming schedule. “He manages to successfully combine these and still hand in work of the highest standard, way ahead of the deadline. Congratulations to Ryan on winning this award and good luck for Sheffield.”
