An East Durham College student, who loves animals, has landed her dream job training to be a veterinary nurse.
Samantha Lavender, age 17, from Sunderland, impressed staff at Blythman and Partners in Hebburn so much while she was doing her work experience there that they offered her a job. The position is at their branch in Gosforth and provides Samantha with the opportunity to train as a veterinary nurse.
She was invited on the placement after spending three weeks on work experience at the practice two years ago.
She has just finished her BTEC National Diploma in Animal Management at East Durham College’s Houghall Campus.
Samantha, who has 10 pets in her Sunderland home including five chinchillas and a bearded dragon lizard, is delighted.
“Whilst on work experience, one day a week for 10 months I gathered invaluable knowledge about the veterinary industry and decided that this is definitely where I want my future to lie” she said.
“I’m thoroughly enjoying working at the Gosforth branch, it is the main hub of the eight branches and has a 24-hours emergency centre, so it’s always exciting”. “I’m hoping to spend some time at each of the branches, which are spread across the North East. Every branch is completely different and can therefore provide me with a more rounded experience”.
Head Nurse at the Branch, Gemma Cosgrove, said: “Samantha really proved herself whilst on her work experience, so we didn’t hesitate to offer her a position as auxiliary nurse.
Whilst working as an auxiliary nurse, Samantha will be training to become a qualified veterinary nurse, which entails two years of hard studying alongside her work at the practice.
