Overview of the course: 

The course is an alternative to A level qualifications for those wishing to aim for a career in the science industry, whether after the completion of the Extended Diploma or completion of a higher education course such as an HNC/D, Foundation Degree or Degree. The course involves practical work in the laboratory-setting alongside theoretical content. Those who opt for the Forensic Science option would be able to study some units such as Criminology and Criminal Psychology.

Entry requirements: 

Minimum of four 9-4 passes at GCSE, including Mathematics, English and Science. Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.


The content of the course is based around science subjects in applied setting. Units studied include: Fundamentals of Science, Working in the Science Industry, Using Statistics in Science, Science in the Workplace, Genetics and Genetic Engineering, Physiology of Human Body Systems, Chemical Laboratory techniques, Practical Chemical Analysis. Those who opt for Forensics Science may be able to study Criminology and Criminal Psychology. The final choice of units will be agreed upon by looking at the requirements of students on the course.

How is the course assessed?: 

The course is assessed through the completion of 18 units. Nine units will be covered in year 1 (90-credit Diploma) and 9 units in 2.

Further study options after this course: 

You will be able to use the Extended Diploma as entry into both higher education (full- or part-time) and/or employment within the science industry.

Length of the course: 

Two years, full-time basis.

Free if you are under the age of 19 on the 31st August 2019.

Free if you are aged 19-23 on 31st August 2019 and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification – contact us to check your qualifications.

Loan funded if you already have a full level 3 qualification or are aged 24 and over on 31st August 2019 - contact us to check your qualifications and for details of how to apply for an Adult Learner loan, which you won’t have to start repaying until you earn over £25,725 per annum.
