Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure

Course Level:

Level 1

Job opportunities after this course:

Level 2 or employment in the sports/leisure industry e.g. coach, leisure attendant, etc.

Overview of the course:

This is a one year course that focuses on introducing you to the various aspects of sport and active leisure, including fitness testing and programming, the human body, sports training, organising events, leading activities, etc. It is also designed to encourage you to develop the personal skills and qualities you need to work in the sport, leisure or outdoor education industries. It is intended to be a practical hands-on programme for those students who prefer this type of learning compared to the rigours of academic study.

As part of your study programme you will also be required to attend Maths and English lessons if you have not already achieved a Grade C or above in these subjects. Your timetable will consist of 12 hours contact time, which includes an hour of tutorial with your Progression Coach.
Finally, you will be expected to complete a minimum of 72 hours work experience within the field of Sport or Active Leisure.

Entry requirements:

This course is aimed at those students working below Level 2, with an interest in working in the sport or outdoor sectors, e.g. Entry Level qualifications/low grade GCSEs/an appropriate standard of literacy and numeracy. Entry onto any course at East Durham College is subject to final approval from the Assistant Principal. Where relevant, the term ‘entry requirements’ also includes DBS checks, references, fitness to practice, etc.

Our entry requirements are in place to support our students in achieving the qualifications they have chosen to study. Following changes in the assessment and grading of GCSE’s as a result of Covid-19, all new full-time students will be regularly assessed by East Durham College at an early stage in their study programme. This is to ensure that students are enrolled onto courses which suit their abilities – following assessment, there may be occasions when learners are transferred to a relevant course at a higher or lower level in order to ensure they are enrolled onto the right course for them to achieve success.

Topics:

The course is quite practical in nature but also focuses on the theory behind sport and exercise. Therefore, lessons will incorporate both practical sessions, such as fitness testing and programming, as well as classroom based lessons. Other topics include How the Body Works, Assisting at a Sports Event, and Improving Own Fitness.

How is the course assessed?:

You will be required to complete 13 individual units. These will be assessed internally by your subject lecturer, and will include observation of practical activities, assignments, and completion of workbooks.
