East Durham College student Mandy Thomson recently won the Care Award at the College’s November Student Awards ceremony.

Mandy aged 43 from Peterlee, is studying on the second year of a Foundation Degree in Education & Care course. Mandy also works as an Associate Teacher at Wingate Nursery.

Her lecturer Paula Kirton said: “Mandy has a strong work ethic and shows great determination and drive to improve not only her academic ability but her work as a practitioner.”

This has also been commented on by her Manager at Wingate Nursery who added: “Mandy is an asset to the workplace and demonstrates the skills of a qualified teacher.”

Her Manager added: “The children who have attended the setting have stated that her group is the best group! What better feedback, than that of the children whom she supports.”

Mandy has produced work of a high standard during her first year on the foundation degree and as she begins her second year of study has shown that she works autonomously whilst still supporting others.

She has already presented a lesson to Level 3 students on the Cache Diploma in Childcare, which explored her work with the children in her setting.

Paula added: “This was an exceptional presentation which clearly demonstrated not only her skills as a potential Further Education teacher, but also her skills as a practitioner in meeting children’s interests in a dynamic creative medium.”

Paula went on to say: “Mandy is an absolute pleasure to have on the course. I would strongly suggest that Mandy continues her study on to the 3rd year of the programme with the University of Sunderland.”
